Frequently Asked Questions - Northwest Ohio
Northwest Ohio has some of the hardest water in the U.S. This is due to the high concentration of limestone, sulfur and iron in the ground.
- Iron can also be found in the water. This can cause red stains on fixtures and in laundry. High levels of iron in drinking water has been proven detrimental to men's health.
- Sulfur - Hydrogen Sulfide gas levels in the water is among the worst things you will find. We have plenty of it in NW Ohio. Often referred to as "rotten egg odor", it can cause much damage to appliances and any metal surfaces.
- Ponds- NW Ohio has one of the highest concentrations of residential ponds per capita anywhere in the U.S. This is due to people trying to avoid the hard-to-manage groundwater.
- City Water - NW Ohio city waters vary greatly. Some municipal systems rely on surface waters which tend to be a respectable source of utility water for business and home use. Other municipalities use well water as a source. The well sources are usually of a lesser quality.
