Aeration equipment should be the foundation of any aquatic management program.
Aeration is a natural environmentally safe way to improve the water quality in your lake or pond. This highly effective water management tool
addresses a wide range of water problems such as algae build up, aquatic weeds, bottom sludge, foul odors, insect infestation and stagnation issues. The goal is to increase the dissolved oxygen levels, which stimulates the natural, clean up process, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing, healthy body of water.
We offer many different ways to aerate and oxygenate your surface water. Whether your preference is for a beautiful floating fountain, a bottom aerator, or a windmill we can supply your needs. Our Lake Life Guard bottom aerator series is the most efficient way to transfer large volumes of life giving oxygen to your water supply. Our Kasco and Aquamaster floating aerator fountains provide aeration combined with the beauty of the fountain display. Our windmills are a great choice where there is no power supply or large amounts of aeration are not required. Which ever route you choose your most important decision is that you do aerate!
Dissolved oxygen is the single most water quality parameter in lakes and ponds. All fish life and natural fish food organisms depend on dissolved oxygen for life. Under natural conditions, oxygen is produced by plant life, primarily microscopic algae and surface diffusion from the air. This is distributed in the water by wind induced currents and by diffusion. These processes are adequate to satisfy the oxygen demand in lakes and ponds only under ideal conditions with very low input of fertilizers and organic materials (grass, leaves, etc.). Few lakes satisfy these conditions.
Most Midwestern lakes and ponds thermally stratify during summer and winter months with intervening spring and fall circulation, commonly called lake turnover. During the stratified periods, oxygen demand is higher than oxygen production in deeper waters (8-10 ft. plus). This is caused by the aerobic (oxygen using) digestion or breakdown of organic matter. No oxygen is produced due to lack of sufficient light and distribution from shallow water is blocked by the thermal stratification. This situation quickly leads to an oxygen reduction or complete loss of oxygen in the deeper water. These results in several problem situations in the upper layer of water including: crowding, more competition for food, extreme fluctuations of pH, oxygen carbon dioxide, temperature and other environmental factors. These place fish in a stress situation which results in less than optimum growth and performance. The deeper water becomes devoid of oxygen and decomposition of organic matter changes to anaerobic digestion with its production of methane, hydrogen sulfide, and partially digested organic matter. The cycle of accelerated eutrophication – literally feeds itself. This cycle is interrupted by use of proper aeration equipment. Aeration equipment provides oxygen to maintain aerobic decomposition and circulation patterns to distribute the life supporting oxygen throughout the body of water.
Beautiful floating fountain aerators are one of the most popular aeration tools used for ponds and lakes today. Using electrically driven motors this chemical free aeration process creates beautiful spray patterns which absorb atmospheric oxygen from the air. The oxygen filled droplets strike the surface of the water releasing oxygen and creating additional wave action while transferring over two pounds of oxygen per horsepower per hour. This cycle of circulation and oxygen transfer helps prevent thermal stratification and supports the aerobic bacterial digestion process. All of our fountains are both UL listed, CE recognized and backed by the finest warranties in the industry.
Aeration produces oxygen-rich water. This oxygen rich water is essential to the ecological balance of the pond or lake, and to the survival of fish and other pond life. Several factors combine to reduce the oxygen level, such as drought, prolonged periods of overcast skies without rain, large amounts of decaying organic matter, and heavy ice and snow cover. Any of these can result in a partial or total fish kill. Aeration slows the growth of some algae; it also improves color, taste, and odor in most ponds.
Pond aeration slows the growth of certain types of algae. The constant mixing and rippling of the water surface diffuses the sunlight and makes it more difficult for algae to spread. Pond aeration improves the color, taste and odor in pond or lake water. This makes the pond or lake water more suitable for
domestic use.
